To verify the license status of a Marriage and Family Therapist in Texas:
Visit the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council License Verification Portal
Select “Marriage and Family Therapist” from the profession dropdown menu
Enter the licensee’s information (at least one search criterion is required):
License Number (if known)
First and Last Name
Business Name
Click “Search” to view the results
Click on the licensee’s name to view detailed information including:
License status (Active, Inactive, Expired, etc.)
Issue and expiration dates
Any disciplinary actions or restrictions
License type (LMFT, LMFT-Associate)
Note: The verification system is updated in real-time and provides the most current information about a therapist’s licensure status.
COMPLAINT PROCESS
To file a complaint against a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Texas:
Visit the BHEC website and navigate to “Discipline and Complaints” section
Complete the complaint form provided on the website
Provide all relevant documentation supporting your complaint
Submit your complaint through the online system or call the 24-hour toll-free complaint line at (800) 821-3205
The Board will review your complaint and determine if an investigation is warranted
You may be contacted for additional information during the investigation process
The Board will take appropriate action based on investigation findings
Note: Complaints are taken seriously, and all information provided is kept confidential throughout the investigation.

If you believe a therapist has engaged in deceptive business practices or other consumer law violations, you can file a consumer complaint with the Texas Office of the Attorney General:

Select the type of complaint you wish to file:

Downloadable PDF form to mail or fax
For online complaints:
Create an account or continue as a guest
Select “Health Service” as the complaint category
Complete all required fields with detailed information about your complaint
Upload any supporting documentation (receipts, contracts, correspondence)
Review and submit your complaint
For mail-in complaints:
Download and print the complaint form
Complete all sections
Attach copies of supporting documents
